Activities and ‘family setting’ at Maplewood provide resident with improved quality of life
Family member credits home for providing father with excellent care
Wednesday September 3, 2008 -- Deron Hamel
Gail Moffat says her father has had an improved quality of life since moving into Maplewood in October 2005, a fact she attributes to the home’s “family setting” and caring staff members who continuously engage her dad in activities.
Because Maplewood, which has 49 residents, is a small long-term care home, it provides a comfortable atmosphere which her dad enjoys, she says.
“Because of the smallness of the home everybody knows everybody — the residents know each other well and the staff knows the residents quite well and the staff are quite approachable if you have a concern or there is something that you need done.”
Moffat adds that the care her father, Leo Peebles, gets at the home is excellent and she applauds staff members at the Brighton long-term care home for their efforts in providing him with a home-like environment.
“I’m quite pleased with the care that he gets,” says Moffat. “He refers to his room as his ‘little apartment’ and if you talk to him and asked him how he liked it there, the first thing he would say to you is ‘the food is good.’”
Since moving into Maplewood, Moffat’s father has become involved in activities at the home and enjoys Maplewood’s cosy atmosphere.
One of the things Moffat credits Maplewood’s staff members with is the fact that they engaged her father and encouraged him to participate in activities from the time he moved into the home.
Some of the activities her father enjoys most are weekly bingo games and Bible-study classes.
Moffat also volunteers at Maplewood, and sees first-hand the efforts of the staff at the home when it comes to providing residents with excellent care.
“I enjoy doing that (volunteering), and through visiting my dad, I’ve come to know all the residents there,” says Moffat. “There is such a family setting in that home — everybody is on a team working together.”
