Volunteers bring 'spontaneity' and 'sparkle' to residents
Pleasant Meadow Manor hosts appreciation luncheon
Monday May 5, 2008 -- Camille Jensen
Sandra Brow says volunteers are the backbone at Pleasant Meadow Manor bringing "spontaneity" and "sparkle" to residents.
“They are uplifting,” says Brow, “and they bring the world into the home.”
To show their gratitude, the home hosted a volunteer appreciation luncheon, April 29. Residents, staff and volunteers attended the event enjoying home-cooked roast beef and apple pie.
Jackie Arnott, life enrichment co-ordinator, says volunteers are a big part of the care team at the home.
“We have a large number of dedicated and caring volunteers that give of their time to give purpose to our residents,” says Arnott. “The staff and residents here at Pleasant Meadow wanted to let our volunteers know how much they are appreciated.”
The Norwood long-term care home has close to 30 volunteers who help with large activities and special events, as well as spend quality one-to-one time with residents.
Volunteers from the pastoral community also lend a hand, conducting Bible studies, church services and communions. Volunteers also come with therapy dogs every Monday and Wednesday to visit residents.
Arnott says volunteers are an excellent resource for the home, which has gained from their services.
“They are always full of really good ideas and ways to improve our programming,” says Arnott.
“We can really count on them for helping out with the bigger programs, for outings and as an extra set of hands.”
Residents also expressed their gratitude, writing messages, which they attached to plants to give to each volunteer.
Pleasant Meadow Manor is always looking for new volunteers. Anyone wishing to volunteer can contact Arnott at (705) 639-5308.
