Three
cases of flu
at Riverview Manor

It has been 48 hours at Riverview Manor without any new cases of the flu.
The Peterborough long-term care home has remained in close
contact with the Peterborough County-City Health Unit following an outbreak
of Influenza A. On Monday, the first resident came down with symptoms
and since there have been three cases confirmed, says Ken Whatman, administrator.
There were about 12 suspected cases of the flu, but some have
since been ruled out, says Ken. He’s hoping the situation is on
the mend.
“We’ve been 48 hours with no new residents coming
down sick,” says Ken.
“Things look positive at the moment.”
Staff has handled the outbreak well, considering some employees
haven’t been able to come to work because they haven’t received
a flu shot, says Ken. Residents were vaccinated in October. No employees
have come down with the flu, notes Ken.
“The staff seems to be really pulling things together,”
says Ken. “We have maintained good staffing.”
The home will not be able to receive visitors because of the
outbreak until the green light is given from the health unit. Riverview
is remaining in contact with officials at the health unit daily. “That
direction has to come from public health, not from us,” says Ken.
“Hopefully in the next few days (there will be no more
restrictions). This hopefully will be a short-lived outbreak.”
