SPRINGVILLE ON—Mildred Hurley has all of her possessions
in place.
A black and white framed photograph of her husband is prominent on
her bedside table next to a vase of eucalyptus and a ceramic cow figurine.
Other photographs and knickknacks line a wooden bureau. From her bed,
with its red, blue and olive print spread, Mildred can see out the
window. A walking path wanders its way around a wooden gazebo.

“It’s cozy,” says Mildred of her
new room at Springdale Country Manor in Springville.
“There’s everything in it that you’d
want.”
Mildred, along with 54 other residents, moved into new quarters at
the long-term care home earlier this week. After less than a year of
renovations, the $1.8 million Springdale project is almost ready for
unveiling. The official grand opening is Thursday, July 24.
The renovation adds three new beds to the Springville home,
bringing its total to 68.
There is an additional 8,000 square feet of space, including a new
wing with 16 private rooms. That wing will complete a square design
for the home and include the creation of a secure, outdoor courtyard.
Mildred says she wasn’t bothered by the construction still underway
at the home. She witnessed some of the drilling, sanding and hammering.
Mildred appreciates her new room and says it’s “different
altogether” from her old quarters.
She calls it “her apartment” and notes all of her belongings
are moved in, so she is satisfied. “It’s not just an empty
room,” she says. “It’s home-like. They’ve done
a good deal making it home-like. With your own things around you, it
makes you feel at home.”
