'It's how you support
the resident that counts'
January 26, 2004
How do we measure our successes? Does there always have to be a happy
ending for an outcome to be called a success? We, at Riverview Manor
believe it is how you have supported the resident along an often painful
journey that counts. |

Supportive measures forces staff to make tough

PETERBOROUGH One resident is crying and the other needs her face washed. An
employee’s past experience can influence whether she first consoles the
distraught resident or wipes the other’s face with a washcloth. Supportive
measures isn’t an easy concept to get used to when traditional long-term
care settings put hands-on care before compassion. Full

Supportive measures is for everyone,
says Frost's
ESM
by Roderick Benns
As Joy Brittain walked by a resident,
who was meticulously sorting through a bucket full of screw nails, nuts
and bolts, she took note that supportive measures initiatives are for
everyone, not only nurses. The nuts and bolts, spread out on the table,
were playing a role outside of their normal use. For the resident Joy
was passing by, they were hooking old memories of his Lindsay area farm,
and presenting a familiar, and comforting chore. Full

Resident responds well to Harlequin supportive

by Roderick Benns
JASPER She looked at the handsome stranger's face
as he strolled into the room. He was tall and lanky and somewhere around
45. His distinguished jaw and broad shoulders framed his presence, and
he seemed to glide as he walked from one room to another. As he drew closer,
he gently removed his hat and smoothed his dark hair. Sunlight from a
nearby window danced about his steely blue eyes and his stare travelled
effortlessly across the room, resting on her smile. Full
