Message
from Fraser Wilson, OMNI’s CEO
Let the human spirit
inspire you
What a way to end the year. After visiting the homes during the last few
weeks, I was left inspired, amazed and incredibly proud of our people. I
witnessed the cumulative benefits of six year’s of investing in education
- investing in our people.
I heard of flexibility in accommodating our residents’ preferences
and earlier life patterns, through initiatives like the breakfast club for
early risers or allowing residents to sleep in at their preference. I saw
rooms being modified to allow residents to remove themselves from the stimulation
of the home. I saw residents offered the opportunity to give back to their
home by folding laundry, setting the table or dusting handrails. I was given
examples where we reduced the reliance on psychotropic medications and created
programs that promoted mobility and independence. Our people have taken
our education to heart and are finding ways to allow our residents to live
life to their fullest potential – and what can be more fulfilling
than that.
In 2004 we will continue to keep up our momentum. We will demonstrate what
is possible with people and the full potential of the collaborative human
spirit.
Some of the initiatives being planned for next year include another dynamic
and timely education program, more networking through Communities of Practice
and a commitment to communication and transparency to ensure all of our
people have the information they need to excel in their work. We are also
planning a comprehensive IT strategy that will improve our networking and
connectivity, improved pain and comfort measures and the roll out of our
new wound care program in partnership with Smith and Nephew and Theresa
Heard. Of course, supportive measures will continue along with the launch
of the new manual.
Obviously we can look forward to another progressive and fulfilling year
together.
As we enter the New Year please take time to reflect on what is important
in life.
All too often we are drawn by societal negativity. It is like a cancer that
eats away at our potential and decays our lives. It makes us to look for
what is not right about our lives, as opposed to looking for what is right.
It makes us look at the fault or flaws in others, as opposed to appreciating
our peers as incredible human beings.
Live life to the fullest every day. Take the opportunity to reflect on all
of the good that we do and put your challenges in perspective. Appreciate
life, celebrate your own successes and accomplishments, no matter how small.
Everybody is doing great things, without exception. Look for it and you
will find it. Take the time to acknowledge people doing good things. Grab
life by the horns - live, love and dream like never before.
Deny yourself nothing; give all you have to others. Give to your family,
our residents and your peers and reap the reward bestowed to you in return.
Allow yourself the opportunity to experience hope, purpose and belonging
every day.
Lift your heart, mind and soul to new levels. Make the decision to be positive
and live life to the fullest. Experience the freedom and exhilaration as
you break the chains of societal negativity.
In the words of Mark Twain “Twenty years from now you will remember
more the things you haven’t done than those that you have. So throw
off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour, let the wind fill your
sail. Dream, explore, discover.”
Thanks, Fraser Wilson
